Sauce Zhan's new self-developed fabric is relatively niche,featuring a red-weft indigo dyeing style.Earlier this year,we saw fade results of red-weft denim from an overseas brand on social media and found the evolution so interesting that we decide to develop our own version.This dyeing process replaces the white cotton yarn with red yarn,achieving a "red-core"fading effect.The red portion uses reactive dye for high color fastness,so as the indigo wears off with use,the underlying red is gradually revealed instead of white.We bagan trails in May this year,went through multiple sampling stages,and have only recently finalized the product for release.While the dyeing theory is straightforward-simply changing the yarn color while keeping the indigo dyeing process unchanged-for a brand with over a decade of experience in raw denim,we still encountered various challenges in production,which slowed down our progress.
Fabric Challenge 1:After the red reactive dyeing process,subsequent indigo dyeing contaminates the indigo dye vats.Since indigo dyeing requires multiple layers and numerous vats,the contaminated vats and leftover dye must be discarded and thoroughly cleaned after each dyeing cycle.This requires reserving the entire production line of the dyeing mill,and upon completion of one fabric batch,all remaining dye is wasted and vats must be cleaned-resulting in extremely high dyeing costs.
Fabric Challenge 2:Color application issues.As this fabric is intended for fading,achieving a layered fade effect is essential-it's not as simple as dyeing ordinary fabric.The red yarn core must not be fully penetrated by dye,while the indigo must be applied deeply and repeatedly only on the surface,keeping the red portion clean.Multiple trials resulted in the red yarn being oversaturated and discolored,which would prevent the red from showing through during fading.
Fabric Challenge 3:This was something we never anticipated:repeated dyeing may alter the toughness and twist strength of the yarn.During weaving on vintage shuttle looms,the proportion of defects increased significantly.While minor imperfections are common and acceptable in old-loom selvedge denim,we discard more severe flaws and only retain those that are slight.However,this red-core fabric exhibited an unusually high defect rate,leading to hundreds of meters being scrapped out of several thousand meters woven-dramatically increasing costs.We will address this issue in future production runs,and these losses will not be passes on to consumers through pricing.
Red yarn,red theme,indigo dyeing.The fabric is woven on imported antique shuttle looms,featuring a blue-line aelvedge id,weighing 16oz.It has been pre-shrunk for minimal shrinkage.The cut follows the 6601XX-R the same as the sulfur double-dyed version in our store-a mid-to-high rise straight leg with a slight taper.It dits the body well without being tight,offering a flattering and comfortable silhouette that has earned strong reviews in our store.The hardware features darkened red antique-finish brass buttons(plated with a red rust effect)and matching red copper rivets(also plated with a red rust effect),adding a solemn tone to the red-themed battlefield concept.
Blue has always been a preferred selvedge color for Sauce Zhan-our sewing machine logo also features a blue background.This time,we've redesigned the blue selvedge id by placing the colored yarn on the outer side,making it more distinctive and visually striking.
